INGREDIENTS & EQUIPMENT NEEDED
WHY MAKE YOUR OWN PLANT BASED PROTEIN POWDER?
1. It's cost-effective
Making your own protein powder can be much more cost-effective than buying them at the store. Store-bought protein powder products can be quite pricey, and making them at home can save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Especially if you are buying organic and looking for products that are free from additives & gums!
2. It's additive FREE
When buying plant based protein powders at the store, you may have noticed that most options contain either chemical additives, processed ingredients & or emulsifiers. Making your own gives you control over what is in your protein powder!
3. You control the quality
When you make your own protein products, you have complete control over the quality of the ingredients you use. You can choose to use organic, non-GMO coconuts and avoid any additives or preservatives or emulsifiers that may be found in store-bought products. This means you can ensure that your protein powders are as healthy and natural as possible.
4. It's fresher
Plant based protein powder made at home will be much fresher than store-bought products, which may have been sitting on the shelf for months. Fresh protein powder will have a better flavour and aroma, and will also retain more of their nutritional value. Trust me, when see how easy it is to make & you taste this homemade version, you’ll never buy store bought again!
5. It's customizable
When you make your own protein powder, you can customize them to your liking. For example, you can adjust the protein, fiber & fat content of your to suit your needs. This level of customization is not possible with store-bought products.
6. It's environmentally friendly
Making your own coconut products can also be more environmentally friendly than buying them at the store. When you make your own products, you can avoid the packaging waste that comes with store-bought products. Additionally, by using local ingredients (if you’re lucky enough to live in a location where you can source them) you can avoid the carbon footprint associated with shipping canned or packaged products long distances.
how to make plant based protein powder
steps to make Plant based protein powder
- Mise en place: As always, being prepared is a must! Having all of your ingredients and equipment ready as well as understanding the recipe instructions will make this a smooth and easy peasy process!
- Prep your pea protein by giving your yellow split peas a good wash & rinsing at least 3-5 times until the water runs clear (I use a fine mesh sieve for this).
- Dry washed split peas with an absorbent towel to remove excess moisture.
- Spread dried peas, gogi berries, hemp hearts and vanilla bean onto a parchment lined baking tray.
- Dehydrate in the oven at about 135°F (57°C) for about 90 minutes. If you don’t have a dehydrate setting on your oven, you can simply set the oven to its lowest heat, or even dry them overnight on the countertop in a sunny spot.
- Remove tray from oven and let the ingredients cool for about 10 minutes until the vanilla bean easily snaps when bent.
- Add all the ingredients to a high speed blender or food processor. Then add coconut flakes & stevia (or any natural dry sweetener of your choice).
- Blend on low for 2-3 minutes, then increase to medium, mixing as needed. Stop and loosen from the sides as needed & reblend.
- Store Protein Powder in a air-tight container for at least 6 months (ensure to check your individual ingredients for expiry dates – it should last up to a year).

Notes
- You can alter the amounts of pea protein & hemp protein as you see fit, however, this will change the flavour. I find hemp protein has a very strong flavour and the amount in this recipe is the perfect balance.
- If you don't eat hemp seeds, you can always replace them with chia seeds, flax seeds or more yellow split peas.
- The coconut can also be substituted with more pea protein but again this will change the flavour profile, however, it is still very good.
