Simple Satiating & Detoxifying Khichdi (also spelled Khichari or Khichri), is a simple dish that has the consistency of porridge. Did you know that it has been used since ancient Ayurvedic times to detox the body? In Alnaar’s culture, it’s a common food for the elderly or for babies because it’s so easy on the tummy.  It is meant to be paired with Kadhi Curry (a yogourt based twist on traditional turmeric curry), yogourt, or another curry. Her kiddos love to eat it with just plain yogourt. It was one of the first foods that they fed their Leanna and she still requests it at least once a week!

4 Simple Ingredients in Simple Satiating & Detoxifying Khichdi

Khichdi is an excellent food for vegetarians too since it is made with mung beans. Mung beans are full of protein and fibre and a bunch of other vitamins and minerals. In addition, they help to detox the body by absorbing toxic residue from the intestinal walls.

  1. Rice

I use Basmati Rice but you can use any other rice you prefer.

  1. Split Mung Beans

You can find Split Mung Beans at most grocery stores in the international foods section.

  1. Butter

I use Savor grass fed butter

For Dairy Free: try substituting the butter for Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  1. Salt

I always use a high quality sea salt or koscher salt. I find if you use a better tasting salt, you can decrease the quantity in the recipe. Quality over quantity!

How to make Simple Satiating & Detoxifying Khichdi

Its simple enough to make my Simple Satiating & Detoxifying Khichdi.  Alnaar’s mom used to make it in a pressure cooker, but after a mishap with her not fastening the lid properly (which resulted in an explosion that required a kitchen reno!), she started to just make it in a regular pot.

Simple Satiating & Detoxifying Khichdi is made with rice and split mung beans. The first step is to rinse the rice and beans. After that, you slowly boil the rice and beans in water until all of the water is absorbed. You will end up with a very mushy mixture. Just add some butter and mash it up to serve.  Pretty easy!

The above photo is what your khichdi should look like before you mash it. Notice that all of the water is absorbed.
